Virginia's Taliban--Bob Marshall--To Oppose Gilmore For Senate Nomination

Now this is entertaining: Virginia Republican Delegate Bob "Taliban" Marshall has announced that he is running for the Republican nomination to fill the Senate seat being vacated by John Warner.

[We call Marshall the Virginia Taliban because he is one of those ultra-right wing legislators who, like the Taliban, would like the State to tell you how to live your life, especially when it comes to sexual mores. For more, see our prior posting, "Virginia's Taliban: Bob Marshall."]

We love it--in announcing his run, Marshall accused Gilmore, a stalwart of the party's conservative wing, of being too moderate. "I did a lot of calling around the state, and I got an excellent response from Republican Party officials," Marshall was quoted in the WaPo. "I just concluded I matched their aspiration for the views they think should be expressed and defended by a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate."

Too bad Virginia's GOP isn't holding an open primary, rather than a closed convention. With Marshall running to the right of Gilmore, perhaps Tom Davis should reconsider whether to run as well, splitting delegates three ways.

The GOP nominee will face off against Democrat Mark Warner, who, at this point is heavily favored. (But, we remind our readers: George Allen was heavily favored at this point two years ago and look how that turned out.)
