Louisiana GOP Caucus Results?

This evening, the Louisiana Republican Party held caucuses at 11 sites across the state to select delegates to a state convention at which Louisiana's GOP convention delegates will be determined. The caucuses could potentially benefit one of the Republicans running for President, but this one really takes the cake--it's so complicated that no one is reporting on it.

The caucuses closed at 8:00 pm--9:00 here--so maybe it's a bit early for results, which will be difficult to interpret in any event. But so far the only thing we could find was from a Ron Paul supporter who stated that the Paulies had a majority of the turnout at the Lake Charles caucus site.

Here's how Louisiana's caucus works (I think): The attendees at the 11 caucus sites voted on delegates to the statewide convention. Those delegates are nominally "uncommitted." But if a majority of attendees at a caucus site were, for example, Ron Paul supporters, they would vote for delegates who, in turn, will support Paul. But that process only accounts for about half the La. delegates to the GOP national convention. The remaining delegates--those who are "at large" or "bonus" delegates--will be selected at the state convention; if someone gets 50% of the vote in a "beauty contest" primary on Feb. 9, then he gets that second tranch of delegates; otherwise, they're also nominally uncommitted.

That said, it looks like Ron Paul has a decent chance of ultimately having quite a few Louisiana "uncommitted" delegates in fact committed to him.

And if that's so, it will certainly teach the Louisiana Republican Party leadership a thing or two about having such a ridiculous nominating process.

In any event, it looks like Loosianans will be ignored, despite this amusing quote from Roger Villere, the chairman of the La. Republican Party, earlier this month: “We’re excited about the upcoming caucuses. I believe this system will allow Louisiana Republicans to have a strong impact on the election of the next President of the United States.”

What the heck is going on down there?

The polls would have closed for up to two hours in some places, so what gives?

How come no results? I almost have a feeling like Paul must be doing well if they don't have or don't want to say what the results are yet.

This is getting annoying - Louisiana should cecede if we are to be ignored this way in the election of our president - no one is covering our caucus - this is insane

Please don't show your ignorance by saying stupid things... it reflects poorly on Dr. Paul and informed supporters like myself. The Louisiana Republican Party caucuses tonight were to select delegates to the county conventions. There was NO presidential preference straw poll and thus, no results to report. The primary elections are to be held on February 9, 2008 and then there will be polling results to report.

First of all, you are not from louisiana and I am(county?? convention...ha)... Secondly, the 15 delegates chosen in each district are nominally uncommited but Dr. Paul has a full slate of 15 delegates running in each district and we Louisiana voters can tell how the caucus went by looking at the list of elected delegates.... Finally, it is people like you who claim to be informed but are not that annoy the regular people in this country and cause them to not vote nor get involved in politics... maybe I am passionate about this election and would like to see some results and maybe I am impatient but at least my anger was posted toward the press and not made toward a fellow Ron Paul supporter (which is more than can be said for you!)

Wooo, another win for the good doctor. Ron Paul for President 2008!

Yo Curmudgeon, get the cock out of your ass. This caucus is for the politically active voters of Louisiana...the only people whose votes should really count anyway.

The most pathetic sight tonight at the Caucus was the sight of mindless Huckabee-ites being BUSED in by the local evangelic church industry to vote for the delegates who will support their favorite phony-"christian" Huckabee. It's one thing to be devoted to a cause but at least know the facts of the cause you're supporting and not become a drone lockstepping right off the cliff!

Yeah, it's pretty insane. They are already predicting front runners and leaders in Florida, and the voting hasn't even started. You can't find anything about the LA Caucus even if you search for it on the mainstream media's sites. Out of site, out of mind. Well, they have to be trying hard NOT to see this grass roots roots movement. Take it off the TV & the internet, and you'll turn the volume of the voice. They should put their greed and power trip to the side.

La. doesn't have counties, it has parishes, and the election for voters, not delegates, is Feb 9th.

Still, because the MSM won't cover Ron Paul even if he wins, La. will be ignored, except for the democratic vote that is.
